Graduate Studies

The graduate programs in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Michigan provide students with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in their chosen field.

Our department strives to be the leading educational and research institution addressing transformative advances in the understanding, design, and long-term protection of interconnected civil and environmental infrastructure systems and the natural environment. We are pioneering advances in innovative technologies that enhance the performance of the built infrastructure, minimize our impact on the natural environment, and manage complex issues at the intersection of built and natural systems. Graduate students in our department are involved with this work as members of research teams consisting of faculty and other graduate students. You can learn more about research in CEE on our research page.

We have opportunities for several types of graduate degrees in five major areas of specialization: Structural and Materials Engineering, Intelligent Systems, Construction Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering, and Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. We offer a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, and three Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) degree programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Construction Engineering and Management. We also have two Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degrees in Structural Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management which are oriented toward professional practice, as well as some dual degree options.

The online application for the Ph.D. or M.S.E. can be found here and the online application for the M.Eng. can be found here.

Our department is part of the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan which is located in the city of Ann Arbor, MI. There are many recreational and educational facilities both within the university and in the Ann Arbor area. More information about student life can be found on the Rackham Graduate School website or the College of Engineering website.
